A theory to think about... its pretty insane...

Remember in Season 1 when Locke and Boone found Yemi's plane stuck in the trees? Well, from that scene, Boone and Locke decide to climb up the hill to get to the plane and see if there were any survivors. As they were climbing, all of a sudden, Locke's leg freezes up and he temporarily loses the use of his legs!

Now in Season 5, Episode 1. Locke sees the same plane, but instead of finding it, he sees it go down and crash lands. He ends up in the same situation as before but this time alone. He tries climbing up the same hill but suprisingly gets shot by Ethan on the leg and temporarily loses the use of his legs!

Do you see where this is going???

The reason that John lost the use of his legs in Season 1 is because in an alternate timeline Ethan had shot Locke in the leg. Hence, season 5 episode 1.
